SIDE HUSTLE: Art from Inside

Advertising is an art. A creative endeavor blended with the commercial side of business. Many creatives go into the advertising business and continue to make their own art—on the side. (Let us not forget Andy Warhol was a commercial artist at heart.) Exercising this creative muscle spills over and benefits the creative output at work. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Marina Hildalgo Blanco, global and European content manager at JWT London, knows this. That knowledge coupled with her experience in the art world (read: fine art) compelled her to start Art from Inside. “I used to work for Christie’s and Gagosian back in New York,” Marina says, “And talking to my creatives in London, I realized most of them were doing amazing side art projects in their free time.”

Thus Art from Inside was born, a monthly art exhibition that hangs in the office reception area. It has proved to be a fantastic way to keep inspiration alive and the creatives happy. Marina runs the program—from picking the artist to showcase and getting the materials printed to curating the show. “We started the shows last August; each exhibition runs for one whole month and it has been well-received among all the agency,” says Marina. “I have a waiting list for people to show through December.”

The upside from Art from Inside? It makes people happy, boosts office culture, and clients love it. It demonstrates that creativity is valued.

And while names may change and faces will come and go, they will all enter and leave the doors of this building with the same thought.
