Executive Creative Director
Michael Jansen, Executive Creative Director of Wunderman Thompson Amsterdam, compensates his 35 years of international experience by being ‘young at heart’. While helping the next generation excel is a priority, it's not a substitute for his own hands-on approach.
Born in Australia, Michael spent his formative years in California before returning to Adelaide with two degrees, choosing advertising over civil engineering as his specialization.
If corner office views are an indication of success, Michael reached the pinnacle of his career as a junior creative at BBDO in North Sydney. Views alone, however, were not enough to keep him from following his dream of working in London – the 1980's mecca of advertising.
A crippling late 1980’s recession and the desire to see his parents’ home country resulted in Michael joining DDB Amsterdam as Creative Director and board member. Under his creative leadership, the agency was voted Agency of the Year in 1999, 2001 and 2003. An additional ‘Advertising Man of the Year’ title supplied the confidence for Michael to co-found two agencies – Selmore and Nothing – with his creative partner Bas Korsten.
Although awards are not the primary goal, Michael prefers winning them over not winning them and is proud to have received more than his fair share. His experience on the other side of awards includes multiple jury duties at Cannes, D&AD, Clio and Eurobest.
Michael isn't all adman, however, and on weekends this married father of three daughters goes analog. His collection of power tools are the envy of many a professional – especially the ones he hires to finish the jobs he doesn't.
