Meet Susannah

Susannah Garrard

Trash Cat Studios is really just a better name than Susannah Garrard. After over ten years working as a Creative Producer, initially in the fashion industry and then in music, she set up Siren Creative in 2019. As a creative agency focused on the music industry, she is always looking for collaborators - but Trash Cat is her solo space where she cover digital illustration, hand drawn pen & ink artwork, and animation.

She also produces custom, up-cycled clothing designs. Pre-loved garments are tailored, embellished and given a new lease of life - using second hand materials wherever possible (it’s not possible to recycle paint unfortunately…). A long time ago I studied how to design and make clothes, so I like to put that to good use.

She works mostly in the music industry so she approaches illustration as a designer, and in a similar way to how she do would album artwork, or a music video. There’s always a story there, and often she'll work with song lyrics as inspiration. She listens to a lot on heritage rock and folk: organic instrumentation rather than electronic. She has a similar approach to illustration in that everything is hand drawn in pen and ink first - then she actually works in Photoshop to colourise and edit. She believes that is unusual!

She works with a lot of ideas connected to nature, fairytales and the mind. She is also a big advocate for political arts, whether that’s music, visual arts or literature. Environmentalism definitely crops up in my work; usually aligned with the kind of art that comes out of street level activism and the skate or surf scenes. She’ve just finished work on a custom battle jacket, THERE IS ONLY ONE CHOICE, which pretty much embodies all of those ideas.

Susannah has donated a piece of her art in support of Hestia. Hestia supports adults and children across London and the surrounding regions in times of crisis. Your donations could help a mother living in a domestic abuse refuge safely home school her child or provide a much needed weekly shopping booster.
