Challenge

Transcat is one of North America’s largest manufacturers and distributors of testing, measurement, calibration and compliance equipment and services, serving customers in the pharmaceutical, industrial manufacturing, energy, and chemical process industries.

The company had enjoyed significant growth in its digital operations, but recognised its business was changing as a result and needed to go further. VML Commerce was asked to support further digitization of core areas of its business, including equipment rentals and sales of pre-owned equipment.

More broadly, Transcat wanted to improve brand and customer experiences across the board in order to cement its position as a leader in a changing market, create operational efficiencies and make the business more agile.

Inspiration

Transcat had a complex operational and business model, and an equally complex digital infrastructure. On the one hand, the company had enjoyed significant growth using Magento as its main commerce platform and wanted to stick with it for the value it delivered, for the range of enterprise capabilities it offered and the fact that it offered plenty of scope for differentiating customer experiences across target segments, serving multiple business types and needs, all in one platform.

On the other hand, Transcat’s legacy ERP and CRM did not allow for a typical Magento integration.

Our inspiration was therefore to engineer a simple, elegant solution that creatively solved these complex technological and business challenges, allowing Transcat to take advantage of a best-of-breed commerce solution paired with its existing ERP and CRM systems without relying too heavily on over-complicated customizations.

Solution

The core of our solution was a platform upgraded to Magento 2.2. But in order to provide the agility desired, we implemented a “headless-like” approach which involved pairing the best of Magento 2 functionality with bespoke middleware, co-developed with the Transcat team, that served as the key connection point between Magento and Transcat’s CRM and ERP systems. This approach created a modular ecosystem that future-proofed the commerce solution, preserved an easier upgrade path, and enabled continual site optimization.

At the same time, our Content Strategy & Creative teams collaborated to create a unique voice for each Transcat Business Unit within a cohesive, conversion-driven digital brand design. Looking at key customer personas, competitors, and business needs, we evolved unique brand positioning for each business, within an updated, modern design aesthetic that streamlined user experience.

Growth

The new site helped to streamline internal processes across the full breadth of the business, which is delivering significant cost savings and organizational efficiencies. Initial figures after launch showed mobile visits up >17%, along with growth in account registrations and customer acquisition, and a major lift in organic site traffic.

The project was awarded the Imagine Excellence Award for Best Overall B2B Implementationat at Magento Imagine.
